The Last Man on Earth was not the only vampire sci-fi to come out of 1960s exploitation film production. The bold genre experiment by independent studio AIP from experimental filmmaker Curtis Harrington (Night Tide, Ruby) who became a superb author of horror locates its nightmare in space that is darker even than a dark, post-apocalyptic future. The queen of the title is an extragalactic vampire discovered on Mars who, as the hypnotic eighth passenger, gradually sucks the life out of the crew of the space rescue mission. Brilliant effects footage snipped out of a Soviet space opera, a psychedelic orgy of colour and 

a monster very similar to Tim Burton-style divas – the lavish visuals more than make up for the wild arbitrariness of any plot logic.
