Ha valaki látta Miloš Forman csodálatos filmjét, a Meghallgatást, annak ismerős lehet a Salaam Cinema alapszituációja. A neves iráni rendező, Mohsen Makhmalbaf tisztelegni kívánt a századik évében járó film előtt, ezért elhatározta, hogy készít egy nagyszabású filmet a moziról. Ötezer castingra jelentkező közül választott ki néhányat, ám végül nem egy hagyományos értelemben vett alkotást hozott létre, hanem a kiválasztás során kibontakozó konfliktusokat és az elhangzó történeteket rögzítette, miközben a mozihoz és a szerepléshez kapcsolódó alapvető kérdéseket tett fel. Ez az izgalmas kísérlet így nem is elsősorban a moziról szól, hanem arról, milyenek vagyunk mi, emberek. 

For anyone who has ever seen Miloš Forman’s marvellous film Talent Competition, the basic plot of Salaam Cinema may well be familiar. Famous Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf wanted to pay tribute to cinema at its centenary, which is how he decided to make a major film about cinema. A few of the 5000 who turned up for casting were selected, but in the end he did not create a work in the traditional sense but rather he recorded the conflicts and stories that came out of the selection process itself, while raising fundamental questions about cinema and acting. Thus this dramatic experiment is not primarily about cinema but about who we are as humans.
