A hatvanas-hetvenes évek épületeit sújtó, világméretű bontási hullám már a legnevesebb építészeket sem kerüli el. Chicagóban az évek óta üresen álló, különleges szerkezetű Prentice Tower is veszélybe került, melynek építésze, Bertrand Goldberg a modern nemzetközi szinten megbecsült alakja. Legismertebb munkája, a kukoricacsövekre emlékeztető Marina City a maga idejében a világ legmagasabb lakótornya volt. A négyemeletnyi szögletes lábazatból, és a konzolokkal hozzáerősített kilencemeletes, lóhere alaprajzú toronyból álló Prentice Tower tulajdonosa, a chicagói Northwest University a különleges brutalista épület bontását tervezi.

Who determines the future of the past?
The worldwide wave of demolitions erasing the buildings of the 60s and 70s no longer exempt the most famous architects. In Chicago, the specially constructed, abandoned Prentice Tower has also been in danger whose architect Bertrand Goldberg is an internationally acclaimed figure of modernism. His best-known work is Marina City, the tallest residential tower in the world at its time, reminiscent of corn pipes. The owner of Prentice Tower is the Chicago institution Northwestern University, which intends to demolish the unique brutalist building, composed of a nine-story concrete cloverleaf tower cantilevered over a rectangular five-storey podium.

Berlin brutalista öröksége célkeresztbe került. A város jelentős intézménye, a Charité Kórház le akarja rombolni a hidegháborús korszak két brutalista ikonját, köztük az egykor hírhedt állatkísérleti laboratóriumot, az Egérbunkert. Eközben elkötelezett politikusok, műemlékvédők, építészek, galériások és egyetemisták küzdenek a fenséges, megalkuvások nélkülien egyedi épületek adaptív újrahasznosításáért. Ki nyer? A kifejlettől függetlenül mély benyomást tesz ránk, hogy a műemlékvédelem néha brutálisan nehéz.

Berlin's brutalist heritage is under fire. The city's powerful Charité hospital wants to destroy two brutalist icons of the Cold War era, including an infamous former animal research laboratory called the Mäusebunker. Meanwhile, a dedicated group of politicians, preservationists, architects, gallerists and students fight for the adaptive re-use of these magnificent, uncompromisingly unique structures. Who will win? No matter the outcome, you're left with the impression that preservation can be brutal.
