St. Pauli Hamburg kikötői negyede, ahol az 1930-as években munkanélküliek, matrózok, alvilági figurák és prostituáltak töltik meg a kocsmákat. Ebben a züllött, de izgalmas világban játszódik a pergő ritmusú szerelmi háromszög történet, amelynek hősei Else, a rosszéletű lány, Leo, a bárzongorista és Karl, a tolvaj. A film hangulatát a remek zenék, az eredeti helyszínek és az amatőr szereplők teremtik meg, akik nem tesznek mást, mint magukat adják. Még a hamburgi rendőrök is magukat alakítják, akikkel állítólag megállapodás volt arról, hogy a forgatás alatt senkit sem tartóztatnak le. Leo szerepében a később sok anti-náci filmben feltűnő Wolfgang Zilzert láthatjuk, egy mellékszerepben pedig budapesti születésű apja, Max Zilzer is megjelenik, akit többek között fia szerepei miatt, a Gestapo gyilkolt meg.

The port district of St. Pauli Hamburg, where in the 1930s the bars are crowded with the unemployed, sailors, underworld figures and prostitutes. This fast-paced love triangle story featuring Else, the lowlife girl, Leo, the bar pianist, and Karl, the thief, is played out in this dissolute yet highly exhilarating world. The atmosphere is created by the great music, the original locations and the amateur actors, who do nothing but play themselves. Even the Hamburg police are the real thing. (The story is that there was an agreement beforehand that there would be no arrests made during filming.) Wolfgang Zilzer, who went on to star in several anti-Nazi movies, plays Leo; his father, Max Zilzer, who was born in Budapest, has a minor supporting part. The father was later murdered by the Gestapo, partly due to the roles his son took.
