A Metropolis története elég egyszerű, és nem kevés mesei, sőt tündérmesei elem van benne: Metropolis urának fia a munkások lehetetlen életével szembesülve a szép Maria segítségével ráébred a valóságra. Apja, egy őrült mérnök tanácsára, megépíti Maria robot-hasonmását. A gonosz robot, rászabadulva a városra, még egy lázadást is kirobbant: a lázadás képsoraiban tűnik fel igazán, milyen gigantikus díszleteket használt Lang, milyen nagyszabású film a Metropolis. Ami után más lett a mozi, más lett az egyik alapvető műfaj, a sci-fi, más a jövőhöz való viszony. A jövőben megmutatkozott valami alapvetően félelmetes, valami szokatlan. Nem csupán reménykeltő volt, hanem felderíthetetlenségében ijesztő, és nem sok idő kellett ahhoz, hogy a totális diktatúrák, a társadalmi elnyomás idején, aktuális is legyen. A Metropolis olyan volt, mint egy rossz előérzet.

The story of Metropolis is fairly simple, and there are quite a lot of fabulous, even fairytale elements in it. The son of the lord of Metropolis, facing the absurdity of the life of the workers, realises truth with the help of Maria. Advised by a mad engineer, his father builds Maria’s robot image. Rampaging about the city, the evil robot incites even a revolt: in the scenes featuring the revolt, the gigantic size of the settings used by Lang reveals what an extra format film Metropolis is. Affected by it, movie and one of its basic genres, sci-fi, that is, the relation to the future, were to change. The future disclosed something fundamentally scary and unprecedented. It was not only arising hope, but in its cryptic obscurity frightening, and little time had to pass to make it manifest, in the era of totalitarian dictatorships and social oppression. Metropolis was like the foreboding of something evil.
